Godzilla's Furniture Care Tips

Ok, my name isn't Godzilla!

It's Reba, but rumor has it that I sound like a monster when I bark - it scares clients on the phone!  I'm a 100 lb., 10 year old Yellow Lab.  This is my baby picture!  If you visit here often, you will see occasionally updated photos of me, even if all you really want are the furniture care tips!

Here is a furniture care tip from my alpha pack leader, The Furniture Guy:

Oil is for the Finish:

Wood without a finish won't last long.  The finish on your fine furniture not only beautifies the piece, it helps stabilize the moisture content of the wood.  If the finish is properly maintained the furniture should last forever.

Protect the finish on your fine wood furniture with a good oiling to keep the finish from drying out.  This will keep the finish elastic and help it move with the wood as moisture content varies.  To keep your wood furniture healthy and beautiful, Oil It!

Ask the Furniture Guy

Dear Furniture Guy,

You did a great job during my Interior Redesign - Debra had you fix all the loose legs on both end tables.  They've been bugging me for a long time!  I also noticed that these "old" pieces looked great when you were finished - so what do I need to know to keep them like this?  signed, Satisfied Client

Dear Client,

Please tell Debra to give me a raise!

Here are 3 tips I give everyone who cares...

  • Dust your wood furniture often, using a soft cloth, with the grain of the wood.

  • Frequently clean, moisturize the finish of the wood with a high quality furniture oil.

  • Always use protective pads or coasters on wood furniture.

Ask the Decorator

Dear Decorator,

What's the least I need to know about shopping for a sofa?  signed, Frustrated & Hate to Shop

Dear Frustrated,

What size, style, color, quality and budget do you need.  That's the answer, not a question.

Measure the space you have for a sofa and take into consideration how many people use the space.  Also take into consideration how they use it ... munchkins and monsters are harder on a sofa than most (Reba resents me writing this).

Next, what style and color do you love?  If you really don't know, start a file of photos from lifestyle magazines.  Only clip out the stuff you really like.  Take your cue from there.

Finally, how much can you afford to spend without breaking the bank?  This will help guide you to what quality sofa to go for.  Normally, the higher the price, the better the quality, at least underneath the fabric!  That's the least you need to know!
