SOUL NURTURING HOME

Transforming Mundane Space Into Sacred Space

September 30, 2001.  Linda and Terry Turner have spent the past several months visually transforming their Bakersfield living room into sacred space.

What started out to be water damage control and restoration, blossomed into a spiritual experience with the use of feng shui, the art of placement.

The synergistic result is nothing short of holy.  “Transforming mundane space into sacred space means creating an environment that nurtures the soul,” says Linda Turner, whose expertise lies in psychotherapy.

Feng shui’s five element remedies were used in the living room, as well as more exacting, and esoteric, furniture placement principles.

The five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood were represented in the room as either color or material - in a specific order - transforming the negative or benign energy into positive energy.  Simply being in the room promotes good vibrations.

The placement converts conventional furniture distribution into sacred geometry.  Long considered the universal language of the divine, sacred geometry is used for the construction of temples and holy spaces.  It is what makes a house a sanctuary.

“It is far more important to get the furniture into the right place in a room, than it is to get the right furniture into a room,” says Debra Blackmon, the feng shui practitioner and designer who helped the Turners with their makeover.

She even argued for using all the existing pieces of upholstery in the living room, but was overruled by the homeowners who were out for a new, updated look.

Terry Turner, TWA pilot, did or supervised all the work himself until the day arrived for the placement of the furniture and decorative accessories.

“To have a room transform under your own hands is a very rewarding experience, and a lot of hard work,” says Terry.  But it is also a very healing experience.  The house had suffered slow, hidden water damage over a long period of time and now has never looked better.

“I teach people to look at the metaphors for their lives,” says Linda.  “Feng shui is about taking clues from our environment and applying them to our lives.”

Bringing more spiritual awareness into our homes by virtue of color and placement profoundly influences the sacredness of our lives and homes, something well worth emphasizing in the light of recent national events.

Asked if they would do it again, the couple stated they already have, in the family room.
